SOS Kinderdorf International(KDI),
an international non-governmental charitable organization. To help orphans
who lost their parents, Hermann Gmeiner, a well-known medical doctor and
an honorary academincian of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, set up the
world's first SOS Children's Village in Immuster, Austria.
To foster orphans in the form of family is an unique feature
of SOS Children's and also is a great and successful creation by SOS Kinderdorf
International. It pursues a family-like management.Every SOS Children's
Village has more than 10 families while each family usually adopts 7 to
9 orphans aged below 14 with a single woman recruited to act as mothers.
Led by a village head, the mother is responsible for managing the family,
rearing and educating children so that they can obtain maternal love and
grow up healthily in an environment of warm family life.
With the efforts made by SOS Kinderdorf International over
the past decades and more, now approximate 400 SOS Children's Villages
and 1000 charity facilities, which includes kindergartens, Youth Houses,
schools,medical centers,training centers and social centers, have been
founded in more than 130 countries and regions in order to help more orphans.SOS
Kinderdorf International has become a high reputation charity facility
in the world,and has attain care and help of all circles from many coutries.
Mr. Hermann Gmeiner, who is its late founder, and Mr.
Helmut Kutin, who currently is the president of SOS KDI, are high praised
by many directors of many countries.
The Economic and Socail Committee of the United
Nation admitted SOS KDI as one of its consultant groups in 1984.
